"Just like a single cell, the character of our lives is determined not by our genes but by our responses to the environmental signals that propel life." – Bruce Lipton
Recently I had the honor of giving a session to a retired doctor who was preparing for heart surgery. His daughter gifted the session because she could sense how stressed and worried everyone was about it. Considering his profession I wanted to explain how Reiki and energy healing works from a scientific standpoint that he could relate to and I'm inspired to share this in hopes that this perspective can help you or your loved ones prep for any important medical treatment.
Cell biologist Bruce Lipton discovered cells communicate to each other and pick up information from its environment. They’re not just organisms programmed to do certain tasks. They are influenced by the food we eat, the thoughts we think, and the emotions we feel. Lipton also pioneered the field of epigentics: how gene expression can be turned on and off depending on our lifestyle choices. What a relief to learn that we have the power to influence our health and we aren't subject to hereditary predispositions!
These discoveries tell us it’s vital to make mindful choices for our physical, mental, and emotional health. Knowing how much we influence our body's response to invasive procedures like surgery, being in a calm and peaceful state is imperative. When we are calm and trust the process our cells register that the environment is safe so all normal cellular functions can occur: the circulatory system can flow with ease, the immune system can be strong and can fight infections, and cells are able to heal and regenerate efficiently.
However, when we are stressed or worried the nervous system communicates to the body that it must protect itself contracting, stiffening, and closing off flow to protect the body. All our energy rushes to our hands and feet to fight and flee. Our cells' membranes stop absorbing nutrients and blocks healing and regeneration. Also known as cell danger response (CDR) studied extensively by Robert K. Naviaux.
So what can we do to help the body shift into a calm and trusting state? We do things to regulate the nervous system and shift it into parasympathetic mode. Simple, natural practices such as Reiki, breath work, somatic relaxation, and guided meditation are effective ways to regulate the nervous system.
Furthermore, scientific institutions like Heart Math and The Neils Bohr Institute have studied the principles of resonance, coherence, and entrainment and how intentional energy influences energy fields. For example the way two tuning forks synchronize to each other shows us how vibrational frequencies resonate and harmonize together. So if a person connects with another person who’s nervous system is regulated, their nervous system naturally entrains and wants to match the calm energy. This is one of the key effects of Reiki. This is also why service animals and horse therapy is popular.
So what's ultimately happening in an energy healing session is we're guiding your body and mind into a state of relaxed peace. In this state the body is more capable of recovering and healing in a trusted and receptive state and will rehabilitate more efficiently because the body doesn’t think it’s in danger. Plus if we're relaxed the doctors and nurses pick up on it as well and will be clear and confident to do their job at their highest capacity without the distracting static of our anxiety and worries.
We live in an environment that stresses our bodies and mind with pollution, toxic chemicals, negative news, and other people's stuff which has created a lot of health problems. Practicing calming techniques like breathing, meditation, and/or quiet time can train your body to regulate. Share this information with people you know who may be struggling with health issues to remind them the power they have to influence their healing journey. Sending you well wishes and love.
